Hot Air Ballooning Safaris
Sunrise over the Serengeti, the way few ever see it.
There is a moment, just after the burner stills and the basket levels off, when the Serengeti goes silent below you. No engine, no road - just the slow drift of the wind, the dawn light stretching across the plains, and the wildlife waking beneath. A hot air balloon safari is the rarest perspective in Africa, and from the right launch point, it is the most extraordinary hour you will spend on safari.
Where to Launch

Northern Serengeti, Tanzania
Sayari Camp
Lifting off near the Mara River, Sayari Camp puts you above the wildebeest migration's most dramatic chapter - the river crossings of July through October. As the basket clears the acacias, you trace the herds, the resident lions watching from the banks, and the slow curve of the Mara as it bends south into the plains. A champagne breakfast in the bush follows the landing.

Western Corridor, Tanzania
Grumeti Serengeti Camp
The Western Corridor offers the Serengeti's most expansive horizons - rolling open plains broken only by kopjes and silver ribbons of the Grumeti River. Balloon flights here drift over resident herds, hippo pools, and the great rivers that funnel the migration through the corridor between May and July. The light at dawn is unmatched: gold on grass, mist lifting from the river, and the basket's burner the only sound.
Planning a Balloon Safari
When to Go
Balloon safaris run year-round in the Serengeti, but the migration timing matters: July through October for the Northern Serengeti river crossings, May to July for the Western Corridor. Flights launch at first light and last around an hour.
What to Wear
Layers - dawn on the plains is cold, but you warm quickly once the sun is up and the burners are firing. Long trousers, closed shoes, and a wind-proof jacket are recommended. Cameras with wide and telephoto lenses both earn their place.
What's Included
Pre-dawn pickup from camp, the balloon flight itself with experienced pilots, and a full champagne breakfast served on white linen in the bush after landing. A flight certificate and transfers back to camp round out the morning.
