All about Mombo

Since 2001, Mombo has been the centre of a unique partnership between Wilderness Safaris and the Botswana Government in a pioneering rhino conservation programme that has seen healthy breeding populations of both Critically Endangered black rhino and Near Threatened white rhino reintroduced to and living in the Okavango Delta.

Located just off the northern tip of Chief’s Island, the largest landmass in the Okavango, Mombo is considered the most fertile area in the Delta, with its mix of habitats attracting large herds followed by numbers and varieties of predators.

Long known as “the Place of Plenty,” Mombo boasts enormous concentrations of plains game and predators and is considered to be one of the best areas for game viewing in Africa. Mombo aims to maintain the traditions and history of the camp, as well as to celebrate our Conservation Purpose - indeed, one of our greatest conservation successes: the reintroduction of black and white rhino into the wilds of Botswana.

The Mombo Traversing Area is highlighted by the massive concentrations of plains game and predators that live here. These include all the big cats, of which lion sightings are frequent. Leopard, spotted hyaena, large herds of buffalo, elephant, giraffe, blue wildebeest, Burchell's zebra and more abound, while cheetah and wild dog can occasionally be spotted moving through the area. Black and white rhino are occasionally seen by a lucky few.

Regardless of the ages of the children, discounted child rates will not apply to the family unit and standard adult rates will be charged for all four beds.

The family unit should be booked for families with young adult children or teenagers due to the design (the entrance, deck and pool are all shared, however, each tent will have their own bathroom (with the second bedroom being smaller).

Children aged 12 years and younger:

Parties with children 12 years and younger, are accommodated at Mombo on the proviso that the party have a private vehicle or sole use of a vehicle.

Parties with children 12 years and younger, may only book Little Mombo if it is on a sole use basis.

Regardless of the ages of the children, discounted child rates will not apply and standard adult rates will be charged for on the accommodation at Little Mombo. Sole use basis at Little Mombo would be calculated as 06 x adult rates.

Laundry Facilities

Laundry services are provided on a daily basis (weather permitting, items will be returned on the same day) and included on the FI rate basis. Laundry is dried by the sun and on most days any laundry placed out in the morning will be returned, washed, dried and ironed, by the evening.

Due to prevailing local cultural traditions, please place any underwear items in the mesh laundry bag provided, so that these can be machine washed separately. Should guests prefer to hand wash, environmentally friendly detergent is available in the tents or can be provided on request.

As an environmentally-aware company, we strive to reduce our water usage where we can. Since towel washing consumes an enormous amount of water, we follow the same policy used by most top establishments around the world: should guests want their towels washed, we request that guests please place these into the laundry basket/laundry bag supplied. Towels not in the laundry basket/laundry bag will be hung up and dried for their reuse.

Note that laundry services may be limited as a result of water shortages. We cannot be held liable for any damage to clothing.

Gratuities Guidelines

We would like to reiterate that tipping is not compulsory. Guests should not feel obliged to do so. Tipping should be undertaken only by choice, subject to the service received. In addition, guests may wish to add a nominal amount for incidentals, ranging between USD 15.00 to USD 30.00 per day (subject to personal budget choice) - i.e. if additional activities are booked once on their journey, if travel arrangements change for any reason, in acknowledgement of good service received in another area, etc.

Guide and Specialist Guide - We recommend about USD 10.00 per guest per day and may be tipped directly.

The General Safari Camp Staff - We recommend about USD 10.00 per guest per day for safari camps. This should be placed in the communal tipping box to be distributed equally amongst all the staff.

Massage Therapist - We recommend about USD 3.00 to USD 5.00 per treatment.

With regards to being hosted by Camp Management and/or Assistant Camp Management, tipping separately for said staff is purely optional and per guests’ discretion.
